Position Description

Job Title:                                                        Crane Dispatcher

Exemption Status:                                  Exempt

Authorization/Supervision:             Project Manager/Vice President, Cranes

Education:      High School Diploma, or equivalent.  Post high school education related to this field preferred.

Experience:    One to three years of prior dispatch experience in construction or related industry; prior supervisory/management experience desired.

Objective:       To organize, plan, and schedule all equipment and personnel for the crane division to create efficiency and develop costs savings.  Work collaboratively with project managers.

Job Environment: This position will require time being spent primarily in an office setting but may require individual to work in an outdoor environment.  This position will interact on a day-to-day basis with all levels of personnel within the company including union and non-union employees, administration, other department managers, project managers and support personnel, and will interact with external sources such as trucking companies and fuel suppliers. This is a full-time year-round position. This position may occasionally be required to respond to situations outside of business hours.

Relationships/Management:  The position will interact with all levels of personnel within the company including union and non-union employees, other department managers, support personnel and be able to develop effective rapport with the vendor community.

Job Responsibilities

  • Efficiently plan personnel and cranes with each job to include:
    • Confirming jobs and times to insure they remain on schedule.
    • Provide maps for crews with appropriate permitted routing.
    • Assign tractors and trailers by unit number.
    • Order Highway permits as required for all units including annual and single trip permits.
    • Ensure all personnel and cranes have current certifications and annual inspections properly stored at all times.
  • Manage rigging through the following tasks:
    • Create and maintain an inventory and accountability for all rigging.
    • Coordinate all additional rigging and load securement needs for each job.
      • Check out all additional items and coordinate loading of additional items to proper trailer or crane.
      • Coordinate off-loading of all additional items upon job completion to include inspection of condition and documenting the check-in.
    • Maintain current inventory list for each crane box and periodically audit each list.
    • Coordinate all rigging inspection requirements including annual chain rigging inspections and documentation.
  • Coordinate with the shop manager for all maintenance needs:
    • Work with shop to preplan and schedule all inspections and planned maintenance.
    • Coordinate planned downtime for all equipment around job schedules.
    • Monitor breakdowns in the field and work with crews and shop to minimize downtime.
    • Keep all crane team members continually updated on downtime that will or may affect jobs.
  • Create and develop effective and efficient operator/oiler teams.
  • Review future work outlook to current staffing levels. All future shortfalls should be raised to supervisor to review options or begin the hiring process.
  • Monitor crew schedules throughout the day and report delays to project manager(s) immediately.
  • Manage yard operations through the following tasks:
    • Provide personnel with specific task list and time requirements for each task and monitor results to ensure efficient use of time.
    • Organize and maintain a documented yard layout for efficient operations and tracking of all items in the yard.
    • Maintain inventory of customer stored items including signing for, photographing, and documenting any exceptions or damage to cargo. Create and place label for easy identification for loading crew.
    • Manage spare trailers for project needs to include pre-loading customer product, crane equipment, or other requirements as needed.
  • Keep track of all yard time hours and any additional chargeable items such as off-loading/loading fees, permits, storage costs, etc.
  • Maintain accountability for proper documentation and signature requirements from all crews.
  • Assist crane division in maintaining a culture of safety with all personnel.
  • Assist supervisor with all other tasks as needed.

Skills, Qualifications and Requirements of the Position

  • Possess strong communication skills and the ability to keep all necessary parties aware of objectives, changes, updates, etc.
  • Must have strong organizational skills in order to handle the variety of tasks.
  • Must have a positive can-do attitude, possess the ability to work independently as well as be a team player, a problem solver, and demonstrate a superior work ethic.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and data management.
  • Must develop positive professional working relationships across all levels of the Company and outside contacts.
  • Must have the ability to direct people and hold them accountable.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
